Reviewing a full soundtrack is not always an easy job. I won't do this the normal way (which would be track-by-track) because it would be too long. Let's start with a brief history of this soundtrack.

Nobuo Uematsu had only one year to compose this music. Apparently, he took two years to do Final Fantasy 6 Soundtrack. (Which is the normal time). As some of you know, FF6 was quite a great advancement in Video Game Music. This marked the beginning of a succession of great compositors like: Yasunori Mitsuda, Hitoshi Sakimoto and others. But enough of this. Let's start the review.

This is not an album you will listen entirely. There are some tracks that you will skip because they just go with the game and not with you alone in your living room. Like "Good Night, Until Tomorrow", I'm not sure you would enjoy the music that plays when you go to sleep. Or "Continue?" which you can hear when you die.

THE GOOD

The greatest tracks on the album would be "Crazy Motorcycle”, “Rufus Welcoming Ceremony", "Cosmo Canyon", "Aeris Theme", "Jenova Absolute", "The Birth of God" and "The one-winged Angel".

Crazy Motorcycle is a techno-style track, I enjoy listening to it since it has a good beat.
RWC, is a great fanfare composed by Nobuo. It's the music you hear when Cloud goes into the parade...."Throw this guy a bomb"...Remember?
Cosmo Canyon: This is actually the fist tune I remembered the first time I played the game.
Aeris Theme is just one of his greatest works.
"Jenova Absolute" and "The Birth of God" just make you enter in the action. As for "The One-Winged Angel"......there are no words for this perfection. I also forgot "Fighting" and "Still more fighting", these two tunes are just what it takes to live a battle. There are some others good tracks, these ones are just the ones I like the most.

THE BAD

"Infiltrating Shinra Tower". I hate this song, it just doesn't give you the will to hear it to the end.

"The Great Northern Cave" which is the music you hear when you are flying with the airship (when Ultima Weapon is flying). You can also hear it at some time when you have the submarine. It's just so calm...and boring...

"If you open your heart” is the music you hear in some caves. Way tooooooo calm.

"Mining Town", I never listened this track to the end. In the game neither. You can hear this track when you take the "thing" to go to the Gold Saucer.

OVERALL

It's hard to say if a soundtrack it's good, because some tracks work only in the game. I can't picture myself listening to all four CD's non-stop. There will be some tracks to skip. But still, Nobuo did a great job on this soundtrack. The music perfectly matches with the game happenings. It deserves 87 out of 100.
