The game looked different; thus, I didn't think much of it. Chocobo Racing wasn't that much of a big deal, of course -- so how could Chocobo's Dungeon 2 be much different? RULE #1: Don't judge a book.. er, video game, by a demo.
I was at the same time receiving GamePro magazine. They had a preview section of the game which said it was to be released in January of 2000. Woohoo, I thought. But my sister caught sight of the preview and fell in love -- she loved Final Fantasy VII and VIII, and now she was ready for Chocobo.
The release date was sometime later moved a few weeks before to be in stores before Christmas. So of course my parents got it for her.
My sister was more than ready to play the game on Christmas day. So she did... Let me tell you the truth -- it STILL looked kind of cutesy and easy. I was kind of snickering on the couch watching it. She looked unamused too. So she gave the controller to me.
I guess I played without thinking, but I just kept playing and playing. This game was interesting.. kind of addicting.
I realized I actually liked the game. RULE #2: If you judge a video game by it's demo, you might be wrong; so.. uh.. don't.
The graphics seemed simple. They looked really nice sometimes (especially for the forest level); but usually, it's more drab, brown dungeons. But graphics don't really matter to this kind of a game -- let me explain:
Chocobo's Dungeon 2 is a game where you go into dungeons (how surprising!) and you collect items, spells, armor, and fight real-time with bosses and small to large monsters.
And.. well, that's about it... of course the gameplay goes into deeper issues like 'feathers'(Feathers can contain special spells or nice abilities). But once you get into the normal repetition of going to dungeons and battling and leveling up and gaining new characters to join you, it just gets more and more addicting. Maybe it's just me, but I've played forever just leveling up - because I was having fun doing it.
The major downfall of this game is dying. It's horrible -- you could be up 24 floors in a dungeon and once you die, you'll lose everything you've gained (items and such) and you'll have to start on floor 1. It's sometimes downright not fair, but you'll have to live with it.
Chocobo's Dungeon 2 is actually a very good game. It needs an audience -- it's exterior looks kiddy enough, but once you get inside, it's all fun and games.

Chocobo's Dungeon 2

When I bought Chocobo Racing back in August of 1999, I realized it had a preview of another Chocobo game called Chocobo's Dungeon 2. I pressed down and pressed X.The game looked different; thus, I didn't think much of it.
