Red Faction

This game is astounding. Review over.

Heh... no, seriously. This game is fun in buckets. When I got it I couldn't put it down (for 3 days... after work, that is). Yes, it's a short, pretty easy game. But the experience... is incredible.

Don't get me wrong - it has a couple of difficult parts, which will take a few replays to get past... but nothing very frustrating. Which I suppose is very player friendly. I just hope they make a RF2... cuz this game rocked. ^_^

The basic plot is you're a miner on Mars. It's not a good job. They treat you like sh*t, there's a plague going around killing people, and more over, your after work hours suck too - cramped 6 to a room, guards always watching.... They're pushing their luck. A woman named Eos is trying to start a revolution (nicknamed "Red Faction"wink... and it begins one day while you're mining. You get caught up in the action, and are faced with a momentous decision - kill or be killed.

And so it goes. You're caught up in a lot of killing (but with very good plot direction by Volition - you always have a clear goal, which really helps make you feel like you're accomplishing something) and such.

The environments are amazing. They look real, they react real - that's the big selling point. The Geographic Modification Engine (GeoMod for short) means you can blow almost (not metal pantries, in the kitchen, for example) everything up. It's pretty cool. If you take out a level on a tower, the upper part falls down. If you shoot a rocket into the ceiling, you get hurt by the debris. It's *so* cool.

The graphics, are of course, astounding. Visuals on PS2 games are hardly an issue anymore. Every game you play will be beautiful. It's hard to have a game that's not. You'd have to try to make an ugly game. As such... this game is amazing. Heh. The graphics are smooth and crisp, never a polygon out of place. The people look quite, and fortunately for the game you never really need to get up close and personal, because you'll have shot them already.

The voice acting in the game (voice acting with accompanying text) is quite well done, like most Volition games. The dialogue is decent as well (the end scene is funny...), thank god this is an American game. ^_~

Another one of the extremely high points of this game is the music. I so loved the music (so much so I'm ripping it!), done by Dan Wentz. It's a very interesting style of techno, with fascinating percussion rhythms and instruments. It's loud when it should be, quiet when it should be, yet almost always there. It really manages to fit the mood. A turn from the more classical music of Summoner, the music is upbeat techno, fiting the fighting and sort of makes you feel like you're in Mission Impossible 3.

A quick note on the multiplayer: you can play with only one real person, but up to 6 bots. There are 9 unique maps for you to have your multiplayer fun on, and the split-screen effect is manageable. Would have been nice if more maps, though.

All in all, this game is pure sweetness - only fault is it's length. I look forward to a possible sequel!
