Nintendo Wii website offers sneak peek at new style classic controller

The Japanese Nintendo website has released a glimpse at an updated style controller for their Nintendo Wii console. No, not the wireless Wii remote that most new titles on the console use, but instead an upgrade for the classic style controller, dubbed Classic Controller Pro.

This new controller offers two new shoulder buttons and extended hand grips, looking quite similar to a PlayStation controller. Like the original classic controller, this one will still need to be wired to a Wii remote. Many wonder what uses Nintendo plans to find for this new controller, as current virtual console releases do not make use of the new button set.

Although set for a summer release in Japan, there is no word on the controller coming to North America yet.

Last Remnant Steaming to PC, starts the fire

Get it? Steaming? It's Comedy Gold™

In case you haven't heard, The Last Remnant is coming to PC in a few months, apparently hitting retail March 20th in Europe and March 24th in North America. Yesterday Valve announced that the game is also coming to Steam, and paves the road for more Square Enix PC titles as it goes.

So, Square Enix games for PC? Aside from the Final Fantasy Online, I guess this might be the first non-multiplayer game? I haven't exactly been keeping tabs on them. In any case, this is good news for all Japanese RPG fans, and certainly gives hope that maybe Final Fantasy 13 will also come to PC at some point. Even though The Last Remnant is made with the Unreal 3 Engine and Final Fantasy 13 is made with the Square Enix's own Crystal Tools, they both support multiplatform releases.

So here's to hoping!

New content, changes to premium services good news for Mabinogi players

Some exciting news was just released today by Nexon in regards to their North American version of the well known online game, Mabinogi. The final update of their online 'teaser' website known as Erinn Walker informed gamers of some changes to the premium game services offered in the upcoming expansion of the game, Generation 4: Pioneers of Iria. Also mentioned was an official launch date; February 26th, 2009.

Players have already been anticipating this new content, as G4 contains much to be desired. Two new races are being introduced to the game, elves and giants. A whole array of new skills also are introduced, including some specific to the new races. The land has also been expanded, to include a whole new continent to explore, including new dungeons and field bosses to challenge even the most advanced players.

The real sweet part of the deal however just came today with the announcement that many premium services will now be available to everyone for free. Characters who reach age 20 in the game will now be able to rebirth for free, previously rebirthing was only available to those with NX, and cost approximately $8.00 USD per use. This means players will be able to further expand their characters without the need for NX cash.

XBox 360 Resident Evil 5 bundle officially confirmed, steaming red hot

About a month ago there was a rumor flying around about a red Xbox 360 Resident Evil 5 bundle. Didn't hear much more about that until today.

Earlier today Major Nelson officially spilled the beans on the XBox 360 Elite Limited Edition Resident Evil 5 bundle in his blog and twitter.

It should be available on March 13, the same day as the game is supposed to be available. If you want in on this, you probably should be thinking about pre-ordering sooner than later. According to Major Nelson, "supplies are very limited" (hence the Limited Edition name, eh?). Estimated retail price is going to be $399, which seems to be the regular price for Elite editions.

What I would still like to know is that which Xbox model this is, are they still cleaning the old stock or what? Jasper model is what I would want. I guess you could assume that since this is Elite, it might be a new Jasper, but who knows.

If you are wondering what the bundle will contain, here's the list for you.

Quote:
* Xbox 360 Elite Console with Exclusive Red Finish
* Matching red wireless controller
* 120GB hard drive
* Resident Evil 5
* Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
* Exclusive Resident Evil Premium Theme
* Xbox 360 black wired headset
* HDTV-ready component HD AV, HDMI and Ethernet cables

News script updated as control panel work progresses

After many hours of tinkering with code and coming up with ideas, we have launched a new news script for our site. Right now it doesn't look much different at all, but there are some major changes which we will soon be able to enjoy, such as sorting news by category, RSS feeds and searching.

Also, not yet available to all but is in the works, the comments system is integrated with the control panel login system, so you don't have to enter your information each time, and can easily keep track of follow-up responses. Much work is happening, but mostly in the background right now. More to come!

Nintendo DSi to debut April 5 in US

Nintendo announced today that the next generation of Its DS line is going to be released in North America on April 5 2009. The DSi has been available in Japan since November of last year selling an estimated 170,800 units, equaling more than 85% of the first shipment. Nintendo has consistently dominated the market with their Wii and DS systems. The DSi will be the first handheld system to lose support for previous generation games, notably the Game Boy Advance.

But where it loses the GBA cartridge slot, it has gained an SD slot, which allows for a slimmer chassis design and potential for a whole new family of mods. It also gives the option of downloadable games, which are now available through the DSiWare app store. New in the DSi is support for WPA Wifi encryption over the previous WEP that is found in the DS and DS lite. Some older games still use the WEP style of encryption.

The DSi has 2 cameras built right into the unit, allowing for more options to game makers. The earliest DSi shop games in Japan (region locked) have only just touched upon some of the things that can be done with the cameras. The DSi will retail for USD $169.99.

Braid for PC well on its way, will cost $15, no DRM to speak of

Actually, $14.95.

Jonathan Blow, the guy behind Braid, posted an entry in the Braid blog today about the PC version, and it currently looks like it will be arriving at the end of March. The game will be sold through various online publishers, Stardock's Impulse and Steam seem to be the confirmed ones so far.

When possible, it will not have any DRM in it, which is excellent news. According to Blow, he has only signed with the ones that have none, light or non-intrusive DRM on their publishing systems. Good decision dude!

I haven't decided where I'm going to get mine yet, it all depends what the remaining stores will be. One thing's for sure though, I will definitely get a copy. It's one of the games I've been waiting to play ever since I heard about it on X360. Speaking of which, if you own X360, you should probably go and buy Braid right now from the XBLA. I command you. GO!

GottaCon 2009

Over the weekend I went to the first GottaCon, in Victoria BC, Canada. First off, I might be a bit biased as I was a volunteer there as well. Walking in the door, you are greeted by the standard registration desk. As conventions go, this one wasn't pricey, $15 for Friday, $20 for Saturday, and $15 for Sunday or you could get a weekend pass for $40. There were a total of 22 events that ran from Friday at 6pm until Sunday at 7pm. The most you could hope to be in is about 11, depending if you wanted to sleep. The Vendors there included many local shops including Skyhaven Games (main sponsor), PlayStation, Under Fire Media who was promoting their new TCG Ethos, DTI Computers, Dragon Impact (Got to have those swords), Knocturnal Gaming, among others.
